Brief Project Description: A response essay is a student essay that responds to a reading assignment or other text, whether visual, cinematic, or otherwise.






Genre Checklist: Response Essay

Does your response essay clearly identify the text that it is responding to, including the title, author, and other important information?

Did you consider all of your possible audiences when writing your response essay, including your professor and your classmates?

Does your response essay say something new or interesting about the reading and what it means?

Do you point to specific places in the text you are responding to (e.g., by citing page numbers or specific scenes or events) to support your analysis?

Do you link your response essay to the content of the class that you are writing the response essay for?

Is the style of your response essay appropriate for the genre?

Did you proofread and edit carefully to avoid grammar and mechanical errors?
